During my last visit to the NASM reserves(26/08/02), i could admire the He.219 being restored. I had a long talk with the project supervisor (left on the tail picture, resting at the rear of the canopy) who is also modeler and a IPMS Fairfax (Virginia) member.

Here is what he told me : The Heinkel could be a A-2/R4, and one of the last produced ones. la dérive gauche du He.219The aircraft is being dismantled and that is when they discovered something about the. For more than 55 years, the aircraft paint suffered of aging despite of all the efforts to stock it. During the dismantling, men in charge of the restorating discovered another camouflage completly unusual, and as new, as it at been preserved from the light during all this time.

Le fuselage du He.219If you take a look at the picture, the limit between the 2 camouflages is clearly visible, which could means that the aircraft had been repainted in its unit and that the discovered camouflage had been done in the factory (which could also explain the 2 swastikas on the tails).

The camouflage done in its unit is really classical for a night fighter : aircraft entirely in RLM76 with flecking in RLM74 and75 on the upper sides.

The factory one is less common : the intrados painted in black matt RLM22 and the extrados in RLM75 covered by twisting painted in a color close to the english S type Sky, which many writers named RLM84 or finishing paint. In the case of this Heinkel, this color is part of the camouflage (made in factory, so not necessarily with old paint as it was common on many german airfields in 1945).

The Museum specialists simply concluded:

- that the color they named "German Sky" was an official color,

- and that the RLM didn't had the time to reference it (it could have been named RLM84).

The restoration teem still have to find the identity of this aircraft and its unit and the table will be complete.

Here is the scoop.

Happy modelling
