LIQUID Tipp-Ex: THE OTHER WHITE PUTTY

By Renaud POUGE

Every modelers knows usual putty, mono-compounded (Tamiya Model Masters or else Squadron) or bi-compounded as Milliput or even Sinto-Fer which can be really helpful when the model has those Grand Canyon like large joint. In some really thin joints cases, as well as in resin bubbles, cyanoacrylate glue can be used and has the great advantage not to reduce after drying. An article published in the I.P.M.S (International Plastic Modelers Society) U.S.A. newspaper focused me on the other use of a new product, which can become a great putty : liquid corrector.

So i went to my favourite office stuff store, & tried 3 different kinds : 1 pen packaging & tanks with applicator ( 1 with a brush, the other with a foam pad). All have an equal chimic composition, with a solvant that corrode the plastic of the model. I tried each of these products with an old model kit.

You have to put the liquid corrector on and let it dry for 24 H. After that time, it can be sanded down like every other putty. Among these 3 products, one doesn't fit, the one in tank with a brush, because the applying is not precise.

Contrarly, tanks with a foam pad (Tipp-Ex) allow you to apply the liquid exactly on the joint you want to process. But you need to apply the liquid on all the joint you want to process, because unlike the pen with a ball applier, the liquid does not run along the joint you want to process by capillarity. This system, gives you however the opportunity to control the quantity of liquid corrector you have to apply to cover all the area you have to putty. It's ideal to cover the deformations and holes that shows up when it comes out of mould.

In the cases of lineary joints (glueing of semi-fuselages, wings or of Karman joint) the best product is the corrector pen. It have the advantage to be more fluid & to run by capillarity along the joints. So you apply less corrector in the glueing area & avoid you long sanding down sessions.

After drying, all these product are as hard as the usual putties and sandind down operate on a casual mode, beginning with a 600 paper with water, to finish with a 1000 paper.

As you apply less corrector with the pens, you will maybe have to apply many coats for a perfect finish.
